The Rise and Rise of COVID 19 in Europe

The impact of Corona Virus (COVID 19) has left the world in a furore !  The death tolls world-wide has rapidly crossed over 11000 and has left the world leaders, scientists across the globe in an utter dismay and searching for urgent cure to this serious issue !

As per the recent update and WHO, the death toll in Europe itself has crossed over 5,000 with Italy, Spain and Germany sharing the major brunt. On Friday, Italy announced 627 more deaths, the highest in a single for the country with the total death tally reaching 4,032.  Italy, with a population of 60 million, has way crossed China – a country with a population over 20 times larger. Italy reached the deadly milestone the same day that Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus first emerged three months ago, recorded no new infections.

Europe has faced a lot of criticism, the way they have handled the issue particularly Italy. Italians faced a lot of criticism, recent one being from Chinese Red Cross team for not taking adequate measures in properly quarantining their citizens and not imposing the national lockdown seriously. As the worldwide death toll crept above 10,000, the total number of infections topped 220,000, including nearly 85,000 people who have recovered. It is really alarming to know that Europe now accounts for more than half of the world's fatalities linked to COVID-19. Across Europe, governments continue to rigorously enforce lockdown measures as the continent's most prominent avenues, squares remained vacant. European countries have told people to stay at home, threatening fines in some cases; Bavaria being the first region in Germany to order a complete lockdown, imposing restrictions on going out for two weeks.

As per many experts, we are yet to face the worst. This finally brings us to a bigger question which all of Europe in particular will be wondering, “ Is China’s draconian lockdown the only prominent way to curb down the spread of COVID 19 ?”.  The answer lies in future and much of it depends on how Europe deals with COVID 19 from here-on.
