It was the first English speaking film made by an Indian. It featured a four-minute kissing scene for the first time, after which Devika was severely criticized and the film was banned. After this Himanshu married Devika in 1929 and came to Mumbai. His legendary films include The Untouchable Girl in 1936, Jeevan Prabhat in 1937 and Durga in 1939. Devika along with her husband formed a studio called Bombay Talkies, under whose banner many super hit films came. Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, The careers of stars like Madhubala and Raj Kapoor rose on their hands. Devika is credited for bringing Dilip Kumar into the film industry.
Devika Rani was almost crushed after her husband's death in 1940 and leaving Bombay Talkies. She fought hard for the survival and operation of her studio Bombay Talkies, but in 1943 she became helpless as Sashadhar and Ashok Kumar and other trusted people broke up with the studio. They broke into Bombay Talkies and formed a new studio, Filmistan. After this, Devika Rani had to break her ties with films. Meanwhile, Devika was married to Russian painter Svetoslav Roerich, after which the two got married and settled in Bangalore. In this way, Devika said goodbye to the film industry.

When the Government of India introduced the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1969 to contribute to the film industry, its first winner was Devika Rani. Devika became the first woman in the film industry to be awarded the Padma Shri. The last rites of Devika Rani were performed with full state honors.
